Tour to Southern Finland

Southern Finland hosts a wonderful variety of birdlife, from decideous forest birds to some mythical “nocturnal singers”, and from top ranked Siberian specialities to highly appreciated wildfowl.

During this tour we will look for many of these species. Based not far from the Russian border, we will look for the “nocturnal singers” but also for the many owls living in the area. Special mention to the two nights spent in hides for Brown Bears, Grey Wolfs and, if lucky, the scarce Wolverine!

Barcelona Birding Point offers a tour every year to the area starting at the end of May. It is possible to combine this tour with our Finland/Finnmark tour.

Daily Planning of the tour:

Day 1. Arrival to Helsinki in early afternoon. The tour participants will assemble at the Airport before starting the tour. We will do some birding around the city where we will have first chances to connect with species such as Common Rosefinch, Thrush Nightingale, Slavonian Grebe, Marsh Warbler and, if lucky, Citrine Wagtail before driving East to Parikaala. After dinner we will have some birding in the area, where we will have firsts chances for Blyth’s Reed Warbler.

We will enjoy views like this from the hides…

Day 2. Early morning start to explore a variety of woodlands, meadows and birch and coniferous forests. Parikkala is famous for the variety of its birdlife. Here we will look for Blyth’s Reed Warbler, Spotted Nutcracker, White-backed Woodpecker, Siberian Jay, Little Gull and Red-necked Grebes. Other real possibilities include Ural Owl, Greenish Warbler and Red-breasted Flycatcher. Depending on the year, some Booted Warblers arrive to this area. In the afternoon transfer Tohmajärvi, arrival to our accommodation and rest.

Days 3 & 4. During these two days (and nights) we will explore Tohmajärvi, that has become famous for Great Snipe and other goodies. This is probably the best place in Finland for Blyth’s Reed & Booted Warblers. This is also the best area for Great Snipe in Finland (and probably in Europe) and also a stronghold for Corncrake. We will look (and listen) for both species. The area is also great for Whooper Swans, Slavonian Grebes, Common Cranes and Geese in migration. Black Grouse is likely yo appear along with nesting Green & Wood Sandpipers. Greater Bittern and Spotted Crakes are common in the area and a pair of spots have regular Greenish & Icterine Warblers. Afternoon of day 4 trasnfer to Kuumo for a 2 nigths stay.

Days 5 & 6. During these two nights we will be mammals hides especialised in Brown Bears and Grey Wolfs. Please remember that up in this latitude is viratually no night so we will enjoy these mammals in wonderful day light, even if being a “nocturnal sight”. Brown Bears are guaranteed every night, and we have really high chances for having excellent views on Grey Wolfs. Wolverine is not appearing every day, but some days every week. Fingers crossed for them! In the midmorning of day 6 transfer to Oulu, where we will have some great birding in the evening including summer plomaged Ruffs & Spotted Redshanks, Common Crane, Garganey, Surf Scoter, Ortolan Bunting and Terek’s Sandpiper.

Day 7. Very early start to look for owls around Oulu, one of the best places in Finland. Here we will look for Eurasian Pygmy, Great Grey & Ural Owls. If lucky, we will also contact with Northern Hawk Owl and Eurasian Three-toed Woodpecker. Pallid Harrier is also a possibility around Oulu, as it is its main nesting ground in the country. After early lunch, transfer to Oulu airport for an afternoon Flight back home.
